Plasticine puppets with the thumbprints left in

Claymation is Lollipop’s clay stop-motion ad format. Sculpted plasticine characters act out an absurd premise completely straight, on a handmade tabletop miniature set built from the same materials they are. Nothing in frame is smooth or symmetrical, the clay carries visible fingerprints and tool marks, and no text ever appears on screen.

A real Claymation ad, generated end to end by Lollipop. Every format in the library ships one you can watch before you pick it.

When does a claymation ad earn its place?

Clay squashes, stretches and mugs. That deadpan, slightly grotesque charm is what sells an absurd premise or a petty grievance, and it is the reason to pick this over a live performer. The joke is played straight; the material does the winking.

The definition is just as direct about the other side. Avoid it when the brand reads premium or clinical, and avoid it when the buyer needs to see the actual product working, because what they will see is a sculpted stand-in.

What makes the surface read as clay?

Identity in this format means material, not likeness. Every appearance repeats the same surface properties: matte, non-reflective plasticine with fingerprints and tool marks pressed into it, limbs rolled unevenly, and a face whose two sides do not match. Perfect symmetry reads as a computer render and takes the format with it.

One gloss is allowed, and only one. The eyes are glossy clay or beads with a real catchlight, set into a matte face, so the shine lands in the single place a viewer reads as alive.

Why the rules repeat themselves so much

Each scene is rendered with no memory of the one before it. That is why Lollipop restates the puppet’s sculpt, clay colour, palette and surface finish in full on every single scene rather than referring back to the last one. Drift in those is what this format’s own rules name as its main failure, and the repetition is the answer to it.

The story shape, not a slot to fill

Choosing a format in Lollipop is not filling in a template. Each of the 21 formats ships its own scripting agent, its own scene agent and its own visual rules, and generation is bound by them. For claymation that means the script stage picks a cast size and a story mode before a single frame is described.

The spine is four beats: open inside the world mid-feeling, escalate, turn into the product so the laugh and the sell land together, then resolve and ask, in character. Never open on the brand. Cutting is paced for comedy rather than energy, so a beat is held long enough for a reaction face to be the punchline.

How long is a claymation ad?

The default length is 30 seconds, and the allowed lengths are 30, 45 and 60.

Scripts are written to about three spoken words per second, so a format’s length is also its word budget. Claymation spends that budget differently from a talking-head ad, because the performance carries beats the dialogue does not have to.

How it compares with the other animated formats

Animation is one of six families in Lollipop, and it holds three formats. They differ by what the characters are physically made of, which decides everything downstream.

The limits worth knowing before you commit

If clay is the wrong material

A sculpted stand-in cannot demonstrate anything. When the buyer has to watch the real product do something, the honest alternative is a format built on a face and a claim, and the Yapper format puts one person on camera for the whole ad to make it. When the sell is an argument with numbers rather than a joke, a whiteboard explainer draws the reasoning out one mark at a time. And when what you want is real people reacting rather than characters performing, the street interview format collects strangers on one pavement.

Clay is one of two handmade materials in the library, and the other reads warmer: needle-felted wool characters, with the fibre and the seams left visible.

Animation is also where a tool imposes hard limits rather than stylistic ones. Higgsfield sells a credit-metered subscription over a large set of generative media models, with a limit of up to 15 seconds per clip, which is a ceiling a story built on four beats has to be planned around.
